Eugene Field Elementary-A Leader in Me School

The winter and spring of 2011 were a very exciting and changing time for the staff at Eugene Field. Several of us knew about Covey's Seven Habits and how they were being used in Quincy and Adams County, IL schools. We started our journey to be leaders by reading The Leader in Me book written by Muriel Summers. Muriel implemented the seven habits used mostly by the business world into her North Carolina school. The book details their successful journey of making their school a place for leadership for students, staff, and families. After reading the book teachers wanted to know more. Connie Spencer from Franklin Covey visited Eugene Field in the spring of 2011 and committed herself to help us begin the journey. In April a team of teachers visited Leadership Day at Washington Elementary in Quincy. Seeing leadership qualities in their students and hearing student testimonials helped us know we were making the right step. During the 2011-2012 school we began our journey to became a Leader in Me School. Paul Pitchford became our Franklin Covey facilitator.

We have many celebrations from just our first year as a Leader in Me School. Seeing students embrace leadership is making our school a better place for learning. We established Leader of the Month Awards presented at our morning assembly and held quarterly Leadership breakfasts. At each breakfast community members and staff from other district buildings were invited. They heard student testimonials, leadership songs, and student success stories. We have big plans as we continue our journey in 2012-2013.

My special thanks to all the staff for their continued effort to be and make leaders for our school, district, and community.

Mrs. Dudding
